Kyle G. Leach

I’m an experimental nuclear physicist, quantum engineer and professor at Queen’s University.

Our team uses radioactive atoms and quantum sensors to study neutrinos, test the weak interaction and investigate nuclear structure. I serve as spokesperson of BeEST and principal investigator of SALER at FRIB.

My path in physics

I studied at the University of Guelph, completing my PhD in 2013 with nuclear physics experiments at the Technical University of Munich. A postdoctoral fellowship at TRIUMF took me to Vancouver to study radioactive ions using ion traps.

After more than a decade at the Colorado School of Mines, I joined Queen’s University and the McDonald Institute in 2026.

Beyond physics

I grew up in central Ontario, surrounded by forests and lakes, and now live in Kingston with my family. Music, hockey, curling, travel and time around Ontario’s lakes are an important part of my life outside the laboratory.
